Journey to GSUSA!

By Guest Blogger Ruth Strawser, Director of Business Operations

A few weeks ago, actually the week before Hurricane Sandy hit, Ruth Strawser journeyed to New York.  Many times, when staff are going to New York, they are really going to Edith Macy Training Center, located in Briarcliff Manor, an area one hour outside of NYC.  But not this time, Ruth went to the Big Apple and directly to GSUSA Headquarters itself!  Ruth has been participating on the Girl Scouts University Leadership Cadre.  This group of 70 volunteers and staff are working together to develop leadership and learning materials for the adults of our movement.  Many of these materials will be used nationwide amongst volunteers (both operational and governance) as well as staff to support our work in our 112 councils.  Ruth is working on a sub group that is developing resources and guidelines for preparing new staff for their role in the movement.  One of their first deliverables was to create a welcome video starring our national CEO, Anna Maria Chavez.  This video will welcome a new staff member to the movement giving them some highlights to be introduced to at the beginning of their involvement.  Ruth worked with another council staff member, Wendy Weeden of Northeastern New York, to write a script and storyboard for this videocast.  They then with the help of National staff members Nancy Moeller and Davina Askin, got some time on Anna Maria’s schedule to tape her parts of the video.  Ruth and Wendy were welcomed at GSUSA Headquarters for taping day and got to see their words put into video format.  They also spent some time with different departments while at GSUSA looking at photos for other parts of the video, discussing human resource elements and diving into more of what the Girl Scouts University is going to offer.  Our very own Jean Orcutt is also participating on this cadre in sub groups that are more directly related to volunteer resources.  Want to know more about Girl Scouts University?  Check it out at  There are free resources such as GS101 and Juliette’s List available at this site.  Want to know more about the Leadership Cadre’s work and maybe how you can be involved?
