INDIANA
LAKELAND GIRL SCOUT COUNCIL – www.indianalakeland.org
Indiana Lakeland Girl Scout Council is proud to offer girls
and young women both traditional and progressive programming geared
to help them learn to apply courage, confidence, and character to
their lives. We serve four Indiana counties – Elkhart, Kosciusko,
Noble, and Whitley – and our council service center is on
U.S. 33 (2400 Elkhart Road) between Goshen and Elkhart, Indiana.
We began as a single-county organization in 1948 as the Elkhart
Indiana Girl Scout Council. In 1956, Girl Scouts of four counties
worked together to reincorporate as Indiana Lakeland Council. Later,
in the 1960s a group of forward-thinking community leaders helped
the council purchase our camp property – Camp Singing Hills.
This multi-use 240-acre site is located near Middlebury, Indiana,
and includes meadows, woods, wetlands, a pond, two rustic lodges,
and a dining hall.
Council staff and 438 male and female volunteers serve 1,706 girls
in 127 troops. We also encourage girls who don’t fit into
the troop mold to join as individual Girl Scouts, called Juliettes.
Over
the past year Indiana Lakeland Girl Scout Council has offered activities
that range from group campouts for girls that include traditional
and nontraditional activities, to special programs on self-esteem
building for girls who are at risk, leadership training for adults
ranging from canoe safety to record keeping, five weeks of summer
camp, lots of outings that involve the whole family, as well as
mother-daughter events and father-daughter activities.
One of our diversity education activities is Zink the Zebra, which
is available for any troop to check out and use during their meetings.
We also have increased our outreach to Latinas in our communities.
In the last year we have promoted a Family Partnership Patch that
encouraged families to take an active part in their troops, understand
their responsibilities to the council as a whole, and consider creating
a family fitness plan.
Our fund-raising efforts have recently landed grants we’re
using with HealthyMe/childhood obesity prevention initiatives to
promote not only good dietary health and exercise for girls, but
also positive mental and physical self images.
