GIRL
SCOUTS OF TRIBAL TRAILS COUNCIL – www.gstribaltrails.org
Girl Scouts of Tribal Trails Council is chartered by Girl
Scouts of the USA to serve girls ages 5–17 in the counties
of Carroll, Cass, Fulton, Howard, Miami, Pulaski and Wabash counties.
Girl Scouts of Tribal Trails Council was chartered in 1960. Prior
to 1960, girls were served through lone troops or as part of preceding
councils – Tribal Waters Girl Scout Council and Girl Scouts
of Howard County. Today, more than 2,831 girls are served annually
and are mentored by more than 770 adult volunteers throughout the
year. Girls are provided with numerous program opportunities to
build courage, confidence and character and to make the world a
better place.
The Council’s main office is located at the June Dunbar Girl
Scout Service Center in Logansport. It is located on a 40-acre wooded
property called Wildwood Program Center. In addition, a satellite
office, “Little House,” is located in Kokomo, where
Girl Scouts may purchase numerous items from the Council’s
Shop.
The Wildwood Program Center includes pristine woods, numerous trails
and a peaceful environment for girls to explore nature as well as
the out-of-doors. Troops regularly meet at the Studio of Dreams,
a ranch style home, and in the basement of the Dunbar Center, equipped
with a kitchen and shower facilities. A computer lab is also available
in the Studio of Dreams. Girls and adult volunteers are invited
to use these computers for their program activities.
The
Wildwood Program Center offers primitive overnight camping as well
as year round overnight lodging for troops. Some troops camp in
the yurt and conduct their program activities in the woods or in
the pavilion. In addition, many group activities, including games,
songs and crafts, are offered to girls in the Green Pavilion, a
large enclosed green colored building. Girl Scouts of Tribal Trails
Council recently developed three new interpretive trails within
the wetlands at Wildwood Program Center. Girls now have the opportunity
to hike these trails along with other trails leading to the bird
blind.
Girl Scouts of Tribal Trails Council is proud of its many programs
offered to girls. The Council’s most popular event is Haunted
Camp, held every October at the Wildwood Program Center. This event
attracts more than 500 girls and adults. The Girl Scout Birthday
Party in Logansport always has numerous Girl Scouts in attendance.
Summer day camps are well attended and include horseback riding,
canoeing, hiking interpretive trails, camping, cooking over an open
fire, making crafts, singing songs, playing games and having lots
of fun.
Programs are provided in the areas of self-esteem, diversity and
wellness. Zink the Zebra is a troop favorite, focusing on diversity
and giving girls a sense of awareness and appreciation for individual
differences. All troops throughout the Council have been provided
with “In the Zone: Living Drug Free” materials, focusing
on drug and alcohol education. Many other programs incorporate health,
wellness, exercise, good nutrition and positive self-image.
Girl Scouts of Tribal Trails Council members pride themselves on
service to the community. Troops engage in numerous service projects
making the community a better place in which to live. Service Projects
include a CanQuest food collection, clean-up days, sewing military
blankets for veterans, an Operation Cookie program in which thousands
of boxes of Girl Scout cookies are sent to the military overseas,
and numerous other projects benefiting the community.
